ABOUT
THE CENTRE
The Centre for Natural Disaster Management was
set up in March 2003 under a Central Government sponsored scheme at Assam Administrative
Staff College, Guwahati. The Centre started functioning after the appointment of two
faculty members. The Centre conducts several orientation and refresher training courses in
the field of Disaster Management under the aegis of Ministry of Home Affairs, Disaster
Management Division, New Delhi.

FACULTY &
METHODOLOGY
The Faculty for the Centre for Natural
Disaster Management joined in the month of March 2003. The Centre is headed by one
Professor who is assisted by one Research Officer. They design, direct and co-ordinate the
programmes of the Centre.
The Guest faculty of the Centre includes
officers from State Government Departments, Faculty from Universities, Autonomous Bodies,
NGOs etc. The training inputs are provided through audiovisual presentation, practical
demonstrations, exercises and group discussion.
AIMS AND
OBJECTIVES
The principal aim of the Centre is to
strengthen training facilities to enhance competence in prevention, preparedness,
mitigation and other aspects of disaster management. The various objectives of the Centre
are:-
To train personnel from government departments
and agencies, community / private sector groups, NGOs, managers, those involved in warning
process, emergency operations, persons responsible for needs and damage surveys, etc.,
To undertake research projects/studies for
improving the quality of disaster management with the help of professionals, scientific,
technical and research institution/organization/experts.
To compile the information available using
computer database programs,
To disseminate by publishing booklets,
handouts, print media, television, radio, public meeting, arranging workshops and other
methods,
To let people to know about the likely damages
of any form from natural disasters,
To find the best & immediate action to
take himself, for family and society during and after a disaster,
To train people to Improvise self and
sustenance until assistance is available,
To encourage people to participate effectively
in disaster communication warning,
To let the people know about the plan &
activities of Government to assist them.
